Drain and Sewer Blockages: How They Occur, How They’re Unblocked, and How to Avoid Them

Drain and Sewer Blockages

Blocked sewers and drains can be really disruptive to both businesses and personal homes as they cost valuable money, time, and effort. To avoid your drains and sewers becoming a hindrance, it’s important to understand how they get blocked, how they’re unblocked, and how to avoid future blockages. Understanding these three crucial elements will improve the health of your drains and sewers in the long run.

How Are Drains Unblocked?

There are two main elements to unblocking a sewer or a drain. First, there is the removal of debris and anything that could be causing the blockage. Second, there is the removal of built-up water.

At Walsh Brothers Industrial Services, we undergo both elements at once for a more effective and more efficient clearance. We use high-pressure water to break down any debris which is then carried by water flow toward the vacuum pump which then removes built-up water from the manhole, sewer, drain, or wherever you’re unblocking.

For particularly difficult blockages, we can use airflow units to load and suck debris and unwanted materials into a debris tank. Plus, if the area being cleared isn’t very visible then we have the option to use a CCTV survey to view down drains from 50mm to 2 metres.

Why Does My Drain Keep Blocking?

It can get really frustrating if your drain is repeatedly blocking and you don’t know why. It’s likely that your drain is still partially blocked. Either that, or there are other problems contributing to a repeated blockage. These include protruding tree roots and structural issues like partial drain collapses and misalignments.

Regardless of the problem, at Walsh Brothers Industrial Services, we can use our CCTV surveys to give you the answers and solutions that you deserve. This will save you money in the long run as we will be able to figure out the exact issue and the most appropriate answer, rather than using trial by error and best judgements.

How Can I Stop My Drain Blocking Again in the Future?

The main way to avoid any future blockages is to ensure that your drains and sewers are properly maintained. Having them checked more regularly by experts from Walsh Brothers Industrial Services will save you money and time in the long run and this will decrease the likelihood of a problem developing and causing structural issues.

Besides regular maintenance checks, drain guards are a little-used but very effective means of reducing the amount of debris that’s washed down your sink and into your drains.

If your drains do get blocked because you haven’t been getting them checked regularly enough, or because you haven’t been using a drain guard, then it’s important to get the problem diagnosed as accurately as possible.

Walsh Brothers Industrial Services can advise on the most effective answers and solutions by using CCTV surveys, and our clearance methods are both efficient and non-disruptive.
